CALL FOR ART!

Newton Community Pride Invites Submissions for “Celebrate Newton” Banner Beautification Initiative

Newton Community Pride, in partnership with the City of Newton, is currently seeking creative, bold, and vibrant designs for approximately 100 light pole banners to be hung in several village centers and along several major thoroughfares throughout the city.

This initiative—entitled Celebrate Newton—is designed to enliven and brighten our city, inspire civic pride, and introduce more art into our public spaces.

PROJECT GUIDELINES

  • Creative Approach: Banner designs should be Newton-specific and celebrate the culture, history, diversity, values, and/or beauty of the City of Newton. Colorful, active designs will receive highest consideration. Designs can be any form of 2D art, including photography.

  • Submissions: Each artist must submit a suite of four (4) designs. Designs must be submitted as either high-resolution png or jpeg files. Banners are 30-inches by 60-inches, and all designs should be scalable to these dimensions. The “Celebrate Newton” logo will appear at the bottom of each banner, with the word “Celebrate” appearing in various languages representative of the City of Newton.

    • All designs must be original artwork and may NOT:

      • Contain images of illegal activity, violence, political views, or obscenity.

      • Violate any copyright, trade secret, trademark, patent, invention, or other proprietary or personal right of any third party.

      • Advertise or promote a business or product.

Artists should read the project’s Official Rules prior to submitting designs.

  • Eligibility: This Competition is open to all artists who are 16 years of age or older as of the date the Competition begins. There are no residency requirements to enter. Artists who are people of color, women, people with disabilities, veterans, LGBTQIA+, and members of other underrepresented and underfunded groups are encouraged to apply.

  • Honoraria: Selected artists will receive a commission of $1,800.

SELECTION PROCESS

Submissions will be reviewed by a Banner Selection Committee consisting of representatives of Newton Community Pride and the City of Newton, residents, business owners, and public art/placemaking enthusiasts. The Committee will have sole and exclusive discretion about selections. All decisions are final and not subject to an appeals process.

Selection Criteria: The Selection Committee will use the following criteria in the selection process: Design presentation, creativity, and visual impact; enhancement of community identity/place; connection to a broad range of people/communities.

The mission of Newton Community Pride is to build community through free and accessible arts and culture programing, public art, beautification projects, and volunteerism.

Bold and colorful banners will be installed on light poles at various locations around the City.
